Welcome to OpenPortal

The OpenPortal™ Initiative is a collaborative undertaking first began in Professor Alfred Aho's Advanced Software Engineering class at Columbia University by Liqun Xu, Xin Xie, Brad Neuberg, and Kai Chem. Certain elements of it began at BaseSystem and the JOS Project.

It is now an independent open source project headed by Brad Neuberg dedicated to building new collaboration paradigms, as well as a political movement to water-down the power and control portal sites like Disney's GO Network portal and Excite exert over the Internet.

OpenPortal™ wants to fight portals with portals by commodifying the very software Yahoo! and Excite use to run themselves. As Linux is to commodifying the OS, OpenPortal is to commodiying portals. At the same time OpenPortal hopes to redefine what portals are; think of it as portal++.

OpenPortal is an all-inclusive community, so as soon as you click into OpenPortal, feel free to download the OpenPortal source code (released under the GPL) to modify it or run your own OpenPortal, or to extend the OpenPortal website itself into entirely new directions. We only ask that you not modify the OpenPortal Home page; of course, feel free to clone the page and make your own alternative front page!
